Details of the data sources are provided below. The data were compiled by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to support marine spatial planning and marine conservation planning objectives in the Pacific Region. For polygon data, the datasets were reviewed, and each dataset was evaluated against the MPATT Seagrass Dataset and gaps, overlap and other discrepancies (including new additions) were addressed. For the buffered point and line features, linear and point features (eelgrass_BC_line and eelgrass_BC_points) were buffered by 200m, 100m or 5m (refer to Buf_dist column) depending on the data source (see below). This dataset does not include buffered ShoreZone features.

For this dataset, point and line buffer areas that overlapped with polygon features were removed from this dataset (Agbayani and Murray, 2024).

Survey effort is not consistent across all planning units or across all areas of the coast and some species tend to be underrepresented by some survey methods. Areas with no data may not have been surveyed and these data gaps are not necessarily indicative of an absence of eelgrass. Some locations may still be important but currently lack associated data to confirm their value.

This feature is a compilation of data collected by many people, for different purposes, using different survey techniques with different methodologies within each technique and, therefore, considerable care must be taken when using the data.
