Human activities occurring on land can impact marine coastal ecosystems. Baseline information on the locations and intensity of these activities are critical components of any impact assessment or spatial planning approach seeking to mitigate stress and protect or restore coastal ecosystems. As part of a wider project, land use maps were created for 109 coastal watersheds draining into the Scotian Shelf Bioregion – a biophysical subdivision of Canada’s marine waters in the Maritimes Region of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Information was compiled from various national and provincial publicly available spatial data sources. Each map provides basic statistics on areal values of different land cover types (such as forested areas, pervious or impervious surfaces, agricultural areas, peatlands, parks and protected areas, wetlands and freshwater bodies), human population density, building locations, and locations of major riverine pour points. This project was funded by Fisheries and Oceans Canada through a Strategic Program for Ecosystem-based Research and Advice (SPERA) grant.

Les informations de base sur les emplacements et l'intensité de ces activités sont des éléments essentiels de toute approche d'évaluation d'impact ou d'aménagement du territoire visant à atténuer le stress et à protéger ou restaurer les écosystèmes côtiers. Dans le cadre d'un projet plus vaste, des cartes d'utilisation des terres ont été créées pour 109 bassins versants côtiers se déversant dans la Biorégion du Plateau Néo-écossais - une subdivision biophysique des eaux marines du Canada dans la Région des Maritimes de Pêches et Océans Canada. Les informations ont été compilées à partir de diverses sources de données spatiales nationales et provinciales accessibles au public. Chaque carte fournit des statistiques de base sur les surfaces de différentes couvertures terrestres (telles que les zones forestières, les surfaces perméables ou imperméables, les zones agricoles, les tourbières, les parcs et les zones protégées, les zones humides et les plans d'eau douce), la densité de la population humaine, les emplacements des bâtiments et les emplacements des principaux point duquel l'eau d'une région s'écoule. Ce projet a été financé par Pêches et Océans Canada dans le cadre d'une subvention du Programme Stratégique de Recherche et d’Avis Fondés sur L’Écosystème (PSRAFE).
