Description: Krill is a generic name for crustaceans of the order Euphausiids, most of which are found in the species Thysanoessa raschii and Meganyctiphanes norvegica in eastern Canada. Krill is an important food resource for many marine mammals, in particularthe blue whale. The layer was produced at our request, at a monthly resolution, by Caroline Lehoux and Stéphane Plourde from the mathematical model developed in Plourde et al. 2016(see Data source section). The model allowed to calculate the probability of meeting a strong aggregation of krill over a period of 10 years. High krill aggregations are defined as the 95th percentile of predicted biomass in 10x10 km cells covering the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence (see Treatment section for more details). A threshold was then set so that only those cells where the high krill aggregations were observed over 6 years or more, not consecutive, were retained. Location: the layer represents the probabilities of strong aggregations in the Estuary and Gulf of Saint Lawrence where we retained only those cells where the probability appears over 6 years or more. However, it should be noted that the 95th percentile is calculated on a grid having a resolution of 10 km and an extent of 72.5°W with 35°W and 42°N with 58°N as used in Plourde et al. 2016. Space distribution of krill in eastern Canadian waters: a climatological appraoch based there is historical plankton net and acoustic data.Period represented on the layer: A grid per month from April to November over the period 2005-2014. This period differs from the period of sampling of the data used in the model to predict the biomass (see following section)#fra Le krill est un nom générique pour décrire des crustacés de l'ordre des Euphausiacés où l'on retrouve en grande majorité les espècesThysanoessa raschii et Meganyctiphanes norvegicadans l'est du Canada.
