Service Description: The juvenile Pacific salmon database, Strait of Georgia, is comprised of biological information from marine trawl surveys conducted annually in the Strait of Georgia and associated waters from 1998 to the present.
The Strait of Georgia is an inland sea between the British Columbia mainland and Vancouver Island. Juvenile Pacific salmon from the Fraser River and numerous other rivers and streams in southern British Columbia enter the Strait of Georgia and spend from weeks to months rearing in this inland sea. Beginning in 1998, a standardized survey using a modified mid-water trawl was initiated to examine the distribution, abundance and ecology of juvenile Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) in the Strait of Georgia and associated waters. This survey has been conducted in early summer and fall since its initiation. The survey was designed to study the early marine ecology of juvenile salmon; however, all species encountered in the catch were sampled. Information collected on all species encountered is included in this database. A Canadian Data Report of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences has been published in association with each survey and links to these reports are provided in this database. These reports should be referred to for specifics about each survey, including the considerations that should be taken when using the data. The reports should be used as the citations for any information that is published or presented from this database.
