The purpose of the protocol is to provide common and consistent methodology for mapping fishing activities across DFO regions in Atlantic Canada. Fishing activity is commonly represented using catch weights, landings, number of sets or logbook entries, hours fished (e.g., trap soak time, trawl hours), amount of gear (e.g., number of traps, number of hooks) and catch per unit effort (e.g., weight/hours fished).</SPAN></P><P><SPAN>The hexagon grid was created using Canada Albers Equal Area Conic projection, where each polygon is 10 square kilometres in size. Since there is overlap in fishing activity between the Atlantic and the Arctic regions, this grid includes Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Divisions 0-6 in the Northwest Atlantic Region, as well as DFO’s Central and Arctic Region. Inland areas were included to incorporate the Great Lakes as well as other larger lakes.
